How Our Gold Price Calculator Works
This calculator checks your piece's weight and karat grade against live market spot rates to pinpoint its raw melt value. Dial in the adjustable payout slider, and you'll see what a local coin shop or scrap buyer might actually offer you on the spot.
1. Enter the Gold Weight
Weigh your item and choose the matching unit. The calculator accepts grams, kilograms, troy ounces, regular ounces, pennyweight and tola.
2. Select the Gold Purity
Choose the item’s karat or fineness marking, such as 10K or 417, 14K or 585, 18K or 750, 22K or 916, or 24K or 999.
3. Confirm the Gold Price
The latest available gold spot price is entered automatically. You can also replace it with a different price when comparing quotes or historical values.
4. Review the Estimated Value
The results show the item’s pure-gold content, theoretical melt value, estimated dealer offer and the difference between those two amounts.
Gold melt value formula
Weight in troy ounces × gold purity × current spot price = estimated melt value
Estimated dealer offer formula
Melt value × dealer payout percentage = estimated dealer offer
*** These calculations estimate metal value only. They do not include collectible value, craftsmanship, gemstones or premiums that may apply to certain coins, jewelry or branded pieces.
Gold Karat and Fineness Chart
Jewelry hallmarks usually appear in two formats: standard karat numbers or three-digit European fineness codes. Use the conversion chart below to match stamps like 417, 585, or 750 with their exact purity percentages and real-world karat ratings.
A fineness marking represents parts of pure gold per thousand. For example, a 585 stamp indicates that an item contains approximately 585 parts gold per 1,000, or 58.5% pure gold. Stamps can be inaccurate or counterfeit, so professional testing may still be necessary.
Gold Price Calculator FAQs:
How does the gold price calculator determine value?
It takes your item's weight, converts it to troy ounces, factors in the exact karat purity, and checks the math against the latest spot price. What you see on screen is the estimated melt value—the raw cash worth of the gold content before a buyer factors in their margin or refining fees.
What is gold karat?
Karat simply measures metal purity on a 24-part scale. Pure gold is 24K (99.9% pure). 18K is 75% gold mixed with 25% alloy metals, common 14K contains roughly 58.5% pure gold, and durable 10K sits at 41.7%.
Does the calculator use a live gold price?
Yes, it pulls live market rates in USD alongside an active timestamp. If trading halts over the weekend or the live feed drops, you can type your own spot price into the box and run the numbers manually.
Can I calculate gold value in grams or ounces?
Yes. You can enter weights in grams, pennyweights (dwt), troy ounces, standard ounces, kilograms, or tolas. The tool handles unit conversions behind the scenes.
What is the difference between a troy ounce and a regular ounce?
Precious metals are weighed in troy ounces, which equal 31.1035 grams. A standard kitchen scale measures avoirdupois ounces, which are lighter at roughly 28.35 grams. Mixing them up will throw your estimate off by roughly 10%, so always verify which unit your scale is reading.
Why might a gold buyer offer less than the calculated melt value?
Melt value is raw metal value, not retail cash in hand. Buyers take a margin to cover overhead, refining costs, assay testing, and melt loss. They will also deduct the weight of gemstones, enamel, or steel clasp springs before quoting you a payout.
Can this calculator value gold-plated or gold-filled items?
No. Plated and gold-filled items are made of base metals like brass or copper with just a microscopically thin coating of gold on the surface. Weighing the entire item gives an unrealistically high number because 95% or more of that weight isn't gold.
How do I calculate the gold price per gram?
Divide the current gold spot price per troy ounce by 31.1035 to find the pure 24K price per gram. Then, multiply that gram price by the purity decimal of your piece—0.585 for 14K, or 0.75 for 18K.
